  • How to enjoy champagne

    At Colonnades we agree with Madame Lily Bollinger and that there is no need to wait for a special occasion to enjoy Champagne. “I only drink champagne when I’m happy, and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I am not hungry and drink it when I am.   • Restoring the glory of the Colonnades at the Signet Library

    Over just a few months, in between delivering memorable weddings and conferences the Lower Library has been transformed as part of a £250,000 project. Firstly, 40,000 books, furniture, sculptures, paintings and artefacts from the WS Society’s collections were relocated. Then, led by interior designer Amy Schellenberg, an army of talented craftsmen have stripped back the years to reveal the room in new glory. The history of this area of Edinburgh is fascinating.

  • Afternoon Tea the early years

    Do we have Anna Duchess of Bedford to thank for the introduction of Afternoon Tea as we know it now? Legend has it that in the 1840s, the Duchess, feeling hungry, asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon to stave off hunger pains – supper was served late. It wasn’t long before she invited her friends to partake on a regular basis. We think sandwiches must have been on the menu too – introduced in the 1760s after a request from Earl Sandwich for meat to be served between slices of bread, to avoid interrupting his gambling game.
