What is your favourite love story or romance novel?
Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare … call me cliché but I do love it (although if I didn’t go Shakespeare it was going to be Robbie Burns!)

Why is it your favourite?
It’s my favourite because the story is so thrilling from the start, and the tragedy felt at the end truly breaks your heart. The characters were so in love you can’t help but love them too, so naturally by the final act you’re devastated. It’s also a love story with wit! I love when Juliet announces “you kiss by the book” to Romeo after their first kiss!

What inspiration/message can potential Signet Library couples take from this?
I think one of my favourite quotes from Romeo and Juliet sums it up best. “Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say goodnight till it be morrow.” Couples need to appreciate the time spent with one another and know that even if they are separated for only a night (much like the night before the wedding) the tomorrow will always be better!

What is your favourite love story or romance novel?
The Time Traveller’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Why is it your favourite?
Although the book has a fantasy plot where the lead male character is a time traveller, for me the writer does a great job at describing the complicated process of falling in love and sustaining a relationship. You get a real sense that both characters have to work hard to stay together and the time travel lends itself to pull them in and out of hard times by reminding them of all the great memories they shared together and they’ve taught one another.

What inspiration/message can potential Signet Library couples take from this?
Try your absolute hardest to remember the great times, especially during the bad times.

What is your favourite love story or romance novel?
Atonement by Ian McEwen

Why is it your favourite?
I love it because it’s set during the war, and who doesn’t love a war love story! The main characters Robbie and Cecilia have a love that lasts through even the hardest of trials which shows the importance of sticking by your partner and supporting them throughout. The ending is heart-breaking, but a truthful display of how tough relationships were during the war. The movie is also incredible and stars Scotland’s own James McAvoy!

What inspiration/message can potential Signet Library couples take from this?
Be truthful with one other and seize the day – you never know what’s going to happen in life!

What is your favourite love story or romance novel?
The Lady of the Lakes: The True Love Story of Sir Walter Scott by Josi S. Kilpack

Why is it your favourite?
This book is captivating as it looks at the history and great loves of one of the most famous Scots in the world, Sir Walter Scott. It’s a true love story in every sense as it’s based on historical fact and this is more intriguing to me as it’s actually grounded in time. Whilst it is not a biography, it is factual and immensely romantic as it looks at his first love – who by the way was an unrequited romance, his beloved wife and the trials that came with the time period and the dynamics of the families and class. He’s one of the most famous members of the WS Society so it’s fascinating to learn that he also had to learn to love and go through heartbreak.

What inspiration/message can potential Signet Library couples take from this?
Your romantic partner isn’t just someone to love. They’re also the one soul who will compliment you and help you through the trials of life, so in all honesty I think the main message from this book is that you need to marry your very best friend like Sir Walter did!
