The Signet Library

Katie and James wed under the soaring ceilings of the Signet Library in January, gently lit by magical suspended candles and lush flora. Amongst their closest friends and family they proclaimed their love, celebrated and danced the night away.

Here’s the story of how they met and how they came to celebrate their day with us …

How/where did you meet?

We met through each other's best friends – it all began in Opal night club on George Street.

How was the big question popped?

We were on holiday on a cruise. Whilst watching the stunning sunset at the back of the ship, he popped the question by asking if the ring would match my nails!

How did you end up choosing to get married at Signet Library and why?

Katie: I had been there many times for afternoon tea with family and friends, so it was always a special place for me. I also saw a few private events there and I borrowed a few ideas from them for my wedding. They would have only worked at The Signet Library.

James: We both truly fell in love with the venue.

Did you enjoy preparing for your wedding and the whole planning process?

Yes I loved it, it was a bit stressful at times but overall it was amazing.

Did you have a theme?

We had a metallic colour theme throughout with silver candelabras, rose gold ferns and stunning gold beaded plates.

How did you personalise your wedding day? Where did you get your inspiration?

We gained the most inspiration from our family and what love means to them. Also Planet Flowers! I think Gemma from Planet Flowers is the most creative person I have ever met and I loved bouncing my ideas off of her and developing them.

Your dress – what made it perfect?

After pinning away on Pinterest, it was clear that I wanted a dress with a stand out back. It hugged all my curves in the right places and the pearls on the back were to die for.

How did you feel walking down the aisle/standing at the altar?

Katie: I was so nervous!! I cried walking down the aisle and didn't think I would.

James: I couldn't believe how perfect she looked.

What was your ceremony like, what made it special?

It was small and intimate and family orientated. We had our nephew do a reading with our niece. They had a few words on love as well as a few surprises!

First dance – what was your song? What made you choose it?

We went with Jack Johnson’s ‘Better together’. We couldn't agree on one for months and this one kept popping back up when we were trying to decide, after a while it became our song.

How did you select your menu?

We worked with the team at Heritage Portfolio and went with what we love – a tasty fish and chips! The chefs worked with us to create a unique menu for the wedding. We didn't want anything fussy or to hear complaints on how people like their meat and in all honesty, who doesn't like fish and chips?

What were your favourite elements? What did people say?

The floating candles by Planet Flowers were stunning. All of our guests thought they had walked into a fairy-tale and it really felt like one!

What about the cake?

Waitrose best! Decorated by Planet Flowers - you would never have known it was from a supermarket. It was beautiful and tasted amazing.

Tell us about a favourite or memorable moment.

When our 2 year old nephew came up to the dress and said "pretttty"! And also when he threw the ring pillow at us during the ceremony!

Any words of wisdom for future happy couples?

Do what you want to do and don't go by tradition in the family or in society. We didn't have white linen and it was the best decision ever, as was the fish and chips!

What was the most unusual situation or unexpected moment?

When I saw tears fill up in James’ eyes during the ceremony when I was reading my vows - he's not a crier.

What are some of the compliments you’ve received about your wedding day?

The beautiful venue, the floating candles and ferns, the food, the band and my dress. Honestly every piece of our wedding got a compliment!

If you had to describe your Big Day in three words, what would they be?

Perfect. Relaxed. Magical.

A new story begins… that is, what happens after the wedding?

We continue our beautiful life together.

Where was your honeymoon, any big plans?

We went on a Southern Caribbean Cruise for 10 days. We had a spa suite on the top deck and loved it!
